requently Asked Questions

How is the Swine Flu situation in Australia? Is there a possibility of cancelling the conference for this?

We are aware that many of you may be concerned about the development of swine flu in Australia. We would like to explain the situation here.

First, at the time of writing this we are not considering the cancellation of the conference.

New South Wales Health has just issued new advice (June 17th) stating that the “Protect” phase is now in operation. This means that measures such as the cancellation of mass gatherings will not be used. This is due to the recognition that swine flu is not as severe as it was first considered, and the majority of those infected make a rapid and full recovery.  More details are available at the following site.
http://www.emergency.health.nsw.gov.au/swineflu/resources/pdf/protect_phase.pdf

This doesn’t mean that we should be carefree. We should protect ourselves, such as maintaining a high level of personal hygiene. Advice are available here:

Second, on your arrival to Sydney Airport, please expect that more than usual caution will be taken in terms of entry procedures. You may be asked to declare your state of health, or subject to quarantine measures if you show any flu symptoms. Details are here:

Do we need to obtain Visa to enter Australia?

Yes, in most cases. Please enquire with the Australian Embassy in your own country. For visitors from Japan, Visa can be obtained on line via the following site: http://www.dima.australia.or.jp/

For the semi-formal dinner, what clothing is appropriate?

Men should wear a jacket, and a regular suit is fine for women (that is, not shorts, trainers, fleece, etc). Of course, if you wish to dress up further, please do so.

If I have handouts, how many copies should I prepare?

Presenters are asked to prepare their own handouts. Outside the keynote speeches, the presentation rooms have an average capacity of 45 people.

May I use the internet for my presentation?

The installed PCs are connected to the internet. It is possible for separately connected computers with Wi-Fi capability to access the internet, however as the set-up takes time we do not recommend it. (For Macs, it is possible to use just the internet via the installed PC).

May I use PowerPoint?

Yes. There are PCs installed, and USB drives may be used. It is also possible to connect Macs separately, however the presenter is asked to arrange a cable.

What is the poster format?

Please make your poster with a A0-size paper, or make it to fit the A0-size, 841mm×1189mm. We suggest that you use font sizes larger than 32.

When should I submit my manuscript for the proceedings?

JSAA doesn't print proceedings. After receiving comments at your presentation, you are welcome to polish your paper and submit it to our JSAA's journal, Japanese Studies.
